Review

The second film adaptation of Robert Penn Warren’s classic political thriller––the first hit screens nearly fifty years prior––All the King’s Men (2006) assembles an all-star cast to tell the tale of an upstart gubernatorial candidate. Sean Penn is superb in the role of Willie Stark, a barnstorming populist loosely modeled on Louisiana governor Huey Long. With a bodyguard (Jackie Earle Haley) and journalist (Jude Law) at his side, Stark attempts to wrest power from the hands of the bayou’s power brokers. There’s no question that Stark’s a man’s man––like many Southern politicians before him, he’s got an avowed weakness for women. From burlesque dancers (Leila Bazzani) to scantily clad ice skaters (Nicole Bobek) and busty Brits (Kate Winslet), the wild-haired Stark likes to keep his bodies in motion.
