Review

The first of the cult midnight movies, Mexico's El Topo (1970) is a symbol-soaked hodgepodge of horrible carnage and carnival horror wrapped up in a western and served still bloody by one of film's biggest braggarts. Writer-director Alejandro "I make films with my cojones" Jodorowsky is El Topo ("The Mole"), a wayfaring stranger shuffling around the desert with his seven-year-old son (played by Al's real-deal loin issue, Brontis Jodorowsky), who just happens to be naked save for a hat. Tope and his unclad lad come upon a village whose residents have all been shredded by a colonel and his men, and Tope sets out to exact the nastiest sort of revenge. Leaving the kid behind with a bunch of monks, he then takes up with magnificent Mara Lorenzio, who tells him that his quest is to defeat four holy men of the desert.
