Songs in the Key of Nudity: Boob Wire

Every so often a nude scene gets paired with a song that, for better or worse, ends up making it that much more memorable, and this Tunes-day tell your brother, your sister, and your mama that we’re looking at the opening credits of a flesh-filled film released twenty-eight years ago this month.

Back in the 90s, of all the pretty ladies around the world, nobody had captured people’s attention quite like Pamela Anderson. The Baywatch babe became a skinstant star thanks to a few Playboy cover shoots and an infamously leaked sex tape, and in 1996 she was tapped to take on the film version of Barb Wire, the busty blonde bounty hunter from Dark Horse Comics.

The film wastes no time, giving fans what they want with a leather-clad Pamela baring her boobs in slo-mo while getting sprayed with water to an electrified cover of Cameo’s big hit, "Word Up!"

Her breasts make more than a cameo though. For almost a full minute, Pam’s cans are uncovered as the credits roll, and the camera slowly reveals the character sitting atop a trapeze while performing at a strip club. Plus they come back out for three additional nude scenes throughout the movie, making it difficult to wave your hands in the air like you don’t care because those hands are busy doing… other things whilst watching.

But back to the opening song, and why it’s the perfect showcase for Pamela’s showered sweater pups. Instead of using the original, director David Hogan elects to use the 1994 version by Sottish rock band Gun, who gave the tune a harder sound - you know, the kind one might hear while watching a sexy stripper work a pole.

****

Even Gun’s music video is more about the ladies, with a bunch of shots of waif-like hotties looking mostly disinterested as the band plays. Cameo’s video, on the other hand, is all about his candy-red codpiece and Levar Burton with a flat top and a Clark Gable mustache. Add in some smooth 80s dance moves and a keytar, and it’s pretty spectacular, but it’s just not what you want to think about when you see Pam’s pillows.

It also works because, like the singer, Pamela’s beautiful Barb hasn’t got time for psychological romance. It’s 2017 and there’s another Civil War raging outside (whoa that’s an interesting bit of future-telling), and Barb has to help save a doctor by getting her to Canada. When her gigantic jugs come out, it’s not to get jiggy. But that doesn’t make them any less enjoyable.

The word isn’t the only thing up whenever Pamela shows her Mam-elas!
