Biography

Dubbed by some to be Canada’s answer to Sally Fields’ Gidget (look it up), Susan Petrie got her big break when she was cast in the title role of Toby, teenage girl, in the Canadian television series Toby back in 1968. Although the series only lasted one season, it put her name on the map, so to speak, and helped her to launch an acting career. Her first big role following the series was as Belinda Harrison in the X-rated Canadian movie Loving and Laughing (1971), a Quebec sex farce that proved she was quite grown up. The actress spent the better part of her time in Canadian cinema, in such films as Rip-Off (1971), Vengeance Is Mine aka Sunday in the Country (1974) and A Sweeter Song (1976), but most American audiences will probably remember her most in the supporting role of Mary Sawyer in the made-for-TV version of Tom Sawyer (1973), starring Jane Wyatt and Buddy Ebsen. (That is, if you can remember anything from it other than Buddy Ebsen's character was named Muff Potter. She reunited with Buddy again in 1976 on an episode of Barnaby Jones, disappointingly not in the role of a character named Muff.) Susan's finest feature, though, was the movie Shivers (1975), directed by the demented genius that is David Cronenberg. Susan plays Janine Tudor, one of many infected by a killer virus that causes crazy lust, resulting in wild sex and the further spread of said virus. As per the rules of such a horror flick, Susan provides a nice gratuitous look at her naked breasts (with huge, thick nipples!) when she does her share of getting it on. For the record, Gidget has nothing on her.
