A year before she took the international film scene by storm with Run Lola Run (1998), beautiful Franka Potente was still lighting up screens in her native Germany with modest indie dramas such as Die drei Mädels von der Tankstelle (1997). A screwball parable about the awkward collisions between rich and poor, Peter F. Bringmann’s film follows the exploits of three gorgeous women who run a grungy petrol station. A few critics lambasted Bringmann for utilizing a weak pretext for showing hot girls in uniform, but that hardly seems like a problem. In fact, Bringmann’s quite good about coaxing his leads out of costume, making the scenes with a topless Potente pretty potent.
