Canadian writer and director Hal Hartley kicked off a trilogy with his tragi-comic film Henry Fool (1997). The film takes its name from the title character, played by Hartley regular Thomas Jay Ryan, a homeless bohemian who drifts into a small town and rents a room in the home of Mary (Maria Porter), her daughter Fay (Parker Posey), and her son Simon (James Urbaniak). Changing all three of their lives, often for the worse, Henry encourages the quiet garbageman Simon to write his thoughts down, leading to a published poem that sends shockwaves through the community. The adventures of this coterie of oddballs continues in Fay Grim (2006) and Ned Rifle (2014), though here we get a terrific topless scene when Melanie Vesey and Denise Morgan pop off their tops at a strip club while dancing with the title character, who proves himself quite the old sailor when he does the motorboat!
