In Edipo Alcalde (1996), a modern retelling of Sophocles’s Oedipus, the scene is Columbia and the protagonist is the mayor. As the central figure in his strife-ridden town, the mayor is torn continually between civic duty and the desires of the militiamen and those of the drug cartels. In the meantime, he marries his mother and becomes his brother’s father. Complicated material is eased along by the considerable talents of writer Gabriel García Márquez. Ángela Molina, while enjoying the attentions of her son, shows off some super-primo pontoons.
