Review

After an altercation on the coast of County Clare ends with Denis Ahern (Stuart Graham) dead on the beach, the series flashes back to earlier in the night at Denis’ 50th birthday party. Celebrating with him among his friends are his wife Val (Derval Kirwan) and their three daughters: the pregnant single doctor, Jenny (Niamh Walsh), the one in the middle of a divorce and custody battle, Anna (Gemma-Leah Devereux), and the youngest who’s stopped taking her meds for mental illness, Grace (Seána Kerslake). Grace’s ex Joe (Éanna Hardwicke) is there, a cop who’s secretly seeing her best friend Cathy (Avoola Smart), also in attendance. So is Denis’ brother Frank (Conor Mullen), as are Alanna (Hilary Rose) and Carl (Thomas Levin) who seem to both be involved with Denis and Val, respectively. In fact Denis makes a speech saying he and Val are divorcing because she’s sleeping with Carl, and this revelation comes right after Grace discovers Joe and Cathy are together now, so Grace goes into complete tailspin. The first season continues to unravel the Ahern family secrets in order to figure out who’s responsible for Denis’ death and the second season begins with the shocking arrival of Finn (Dean Fagan) who claims to be Denis’ illegitimate son. Obviously this is all a lot for the family to take, so it’s no surprise when we see Gemma burst out of the house and let out a primal scream into the air. In fact she’s so frustrated and sad, she didn’t have time to put on a bra and we can clearly see her hard nips underneath her top as it’s whipped by a brisk wind. It’s safe to say Gemma can smother us with her fluffy pillows anytime!
